Blue Tech Week

November 6, 2018

At the 10th Annual Blue Tech Week in San Diego, organized by the Maritime Alliance, I was a speaker and moderator of a panel on fishing and netting gear alternative solutions. Blue Tech Week brings together scientists, policy makers, and entrepreneurs as they promote blue tech and blue jobs. I also moderated a panel for Blue Tech Week in 2020.

PAGI

October 1-4, 2018

The Plastics Awareness Global Initiative (PAGI) was a multidisciplinary symposium hosted at Scripps that hosted international scientific experts on marine plastics, as well as members of the industry, nonprofit and art/activism sectors. There were two panels open to the public, the second of which I moderated. I also ran a four day working group of scientists that will result in a peer-reviewed paper.

Salty Cinema

January 18, 2018

I partnered with masters students at Scripps to speak on an expert panel about plastics for a community outreach program called Salty Cinema. Salty Cinema is a program where Scripps students screen a documentary and then hold a Q&A panel with scientists and experts on the topic of the documentary. Their third event was on plastics (above). It was such a success that we also brought the documentary screening and outreach tabling to a local La Jolla elementary school science fair, and Salty Cinema has grown in popularity ever since.

The Benioff Ocean Initiative is an innovative program at UCSB aimed at finding and funding real solutions to ocean problems. One of the first problems they are tackling is marine debris, and one of the first events they held was a summit on marine debris before California voted on the statewide plastic bag ban. This summit brought together scientists, economists, educators, and activists. This article is a synopsis of the panel, written by Monterey Bay Aquarium.
